Address of Fundación Galiza Sempre at the seminar Right to Self-Determination: A New Europe based on People’s Rights. European Social Forum. Malmö, 17th to 21st of September 2008.
The contemporary political movement in favour of exercising its sovereignty over the Galician populace started with the uprising of 1846 which was stifled by the army of the Spanish monarchy. The so-called “Martyrs of Carral” marked the beginning of the process of a civic, cultural and political struggle for self-determination of a Galician nation: the Suebi Kingdom had claimed statehood since the fall of the Roman Empire until the Middle Ages, when it became known as the Kingdom of Galicia.
